Service Learning

Service Learning

Service Learning is a key component of International Baccalaureate (IB)programmes, designed to develop students’ personal and social responsibility through active participation in community service. This experiential learning approach is integrated into the curriculum at St. Cecelia Catholic School across our Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP). Service Learning in the PYP culminates with the Fifth Grade Exhibition Project and Service Learning in the MYP culminates with the Eighth Grade Community Service Project.

Key Features of IB Service Learning

  1. Integration with Curriculum: Service learning is not an add-on activity but is embedded within the academic curriculum. It helps students apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations, reinforcing their academic knowledge and skills.
  2. Focus on Community Needs: Students identify and investigate genuine community needs and plan and implement projects to address these needs. This ensures that the service activities are meaningful and beneficial to both the students and the community.
  3. Reflection: Reflection is a critical component of IB service learning. Students regularly reflect on their experiences, considering what they have learned, the impact of their actions, and how they can apply these insights in the future. This reflection process helps deepen their understanding and personal growth.
  4. Collaboration: Service learning projects often involve collaboration with peers, teachers, and community members. This collaborative approach helps students develop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.
  5. Global Context: In line with the IB’s mission to develop internationally minded individuals, service learning often includes a global perspective. Students may engage in projects that address global issues, fostering a sense of international understanding and empathy.
  6. Personal Development: Service learning encourages students to take on challenges, show initiative, and develop a sense of responsibility. It promotes the development of attributes such as empathy, respect, and integrity, which are part of the IB Learner Profile.
