Tips From St. Cecelia Catholic School to Help Your Child Deal With Stress and Change
Students, parents, teachers, and the entire education system face new challenges to protect the health and safety of children at school. We’ve changed our routine to accommodate state and local guidelines. Amid these changes, we want to help our students maintain a normal, comfortable, fun experience at school.
Children love the security of their family. They benefit from everyday family routines that help them feel safe. Develop a routine for your child, even if that routine changes slightly from day to day or week to week. Have meal times, bed times, and school prep times the same every day as much as possible. Do your kids do homework right after school or after dinner? Keep that the same during the school year.
Favorite Meals
Do your kids have favorite meals? A wholesome meal that brings everyone together is perfect when kids are dealing with stress or change. For example, you might plan something special if your child has a test coming up, a big event tomorrow, or their first day of in-person classes after remote learning. Take a little extra time during the meal to talk about the challenge together. Life is always changing, but we can always handle it together.
Fun Times
Kids need to be kids. Keep things fun and lighthearted if there are stressful times or changes. This doesn’t mean to make light of a serious situation, but it does mean trying to maintain a positive attitude and shift things away from serious subjects when there’s stress or change.
Enough Sleep
Sleep is imperative to reducing stress. Sleep is your body’s natural healing mechanism. Rest helps your body detox from the previous day, lets your brain process the events of the week, and refreshes your spirit. Make sure your child gets at least eight hours of sleep every night for reduced stress levels during the day.
